The renovation transformed the Rep’s aging Bagley Wright Theatre and Lobby to create a vibrant setting for audience engagement and immersion in the theatrical experience. The lobby’s new stairway and scrim create an interactive focal point at the heart of the space, expressing the Rep’s vision of Theater at the Heart of Public Life. The revitalized Bagley Wright Theatre enhances the audience connection to performers, with a broader central seating that de-emphasizes the aisles. The deep color palette recedes during performances, eliminating distractions. New wheelchair positions are integrated near the stage and more centrally at the rear, while new ramped accessible aisles along the perimeter with screen walls enhance the sense of intimacy within the theatre. New energy-efficient lighting and recycled material use are notable sustainable design features, but the key sustainable strategy was to significantly extend the useful life of this aging 45 year-old facility without substantial demolition or extensive re-construction, minimizing the net carbon footprint.
